MRS Momotaros

Ore no review, Turquoise Version!

From wave 2 of the Motion Revive Series of Kamen Rider toys, Momotaros would also see a re-release in wave 6.5, dubbed the Best Selection wave. The one on review here is the original though.

So… it’s Momotaros aka the Devil aka Satan aka Gozer aka Fek’lhr, Guardian of Gre’thor, where the dishonored go when they DIE! The demonic monster from the FUTURE, who loves to fight and kill things and has no sense of common morality (such as the wrong-ness of theft) and who possesses the naive and innocent Ryotarou in Kamen Rider Den-O (circa 2007).

Oh, and he’s actually one of the good guys.

The first impression of Momotaros is almost always that he’s the villain. He’s like Reverse Skeletor, in that he’s Obviously Evil… but he’s not. He’s actually a pretty decent guy with a strong sense of justice and stuff. But the misunderstanding is amusing to poke fun at. The 2009 series of Kamen Rider has Momotaros appear a couple times. And the initial reaction to his true form is that of being confronted by a monster. Heck, Kamen Rider Kuuga even kicked him, thinking he’s the baddie. Well, enough blathering, onto the toy itself.

Not much to say really, it’s Momotaros, in 3.75″ scale. That’s a good thing. Very good. He’s got the standard MRS engineering, meaning he’s durable, playable and well articulated. He’s also got a pretty streamlined design. Sure, there are spikes and horns and satanic markings all over him, but they’re not huge shoulders that get in the way or anything, so he’s actually slightly more posable than some MRS.

Otherwise, Momotaros has your standard MRS articulation:

Balljoint at base of neck (1).
Double balljointed pectorals/shoulders (5)
Swivel upper biceps (7)
Double jointed elbows (11)
Swivel wrists (13)
Balljointed mid-torso (14)
Balljointed hips (16)
Swivel upper thighs (18)
Double jointed knees (22)
Balljointed feet (24)

That’s pretty darn posable.

It’s not all coffee and roses though. Momotaros’ headsculpt is great, but at this scale, it’s hard to make out his perpetually fang gritting mouth. It’s still there, but your eyes’ focus will be on his outer “mouth”. No biggie, a weakness of the scale. Momotaros also has no neutral right hand. He has a finger pointy right hand and a coffee holding right hand, but no neutral right hand. The Best Selection version doesn’t fix this either, as it merely provides him with a hand holding his signature sword.

Overall
It’s Momo-frikin’-taros! Momo is awesome by default. Despite the right hand issue and a nitpick or two, this guy is absolutely FABULOUS! It doesn’t even matter if you don’t know Kamen Rider, in a jiffy, he can work as the Devil for your toys, or even as some sorta Sith Satan sword-type guy. And don’t forget, Motion Revive Series figures are pretty cheap for imports, even after shipping. Highly recommended, regardless of your knowledge of the character.

Pros: It’s Momotaros. Looks awesome. Has COFFEE. Is Momotaros. Articulated. Satanic. It’s Momo-frikin’-taros.
Cons: No neutral right hand. Head is slightly show inaccurate due to scale of toy.

3.9 out of 4.0

———————————–
0.0 – 0.0 = I’d pay to get rid of it
0.1 – 0.5 = I’d give it away
0.6 – 1.0 = I wouldn’t take it for free
1.1 – 1.5 = Very Bad
1.6 – 2.0 = Bad
2.1 – 2.5 = Average
2.6 – 3.0 = Good
3.1 – 3.5 = Very Good
3.6 – 4.0 = Excellent

  1. Great review and and for the most part I agreed with you said.
I just got him and all of set 2, just now!
They are so frickin’ awesome I wish my comic store had other series.
    Thanks for the review!

      Yup.

Set 2 seems to be in more abundance than other sets for some reason, which is good, since it’s probably one of the better sets with a nice mix of characters.
