I’ve finally taken my place in the long line of Coneheads.
Good robot mode with some restricted elbow movement due to kibble, but otherwise looks great (if a little kibbly) and has good articulation. Splendid jet mode with a good transformation in-between. Perfect for your Decepticon air force. A recommended figure.
A Deluxe Decepticon figure from the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen toyline. Dirge is part of the NEST sub-line, which means story wise, he’s terrified and running for his life from the evil Autobots and their cruel minions, the humans.
Starting with the jet mode, Dirge is a terrific jet-former, for several reasons. For one, he’s an interesting model for a plane. I’m not sure what model he’s based on exactly, but for a semi-realistic plane, he looks pretty different from other jet-formers. Which means that he’s excellent insofar as boosting your air force. Of course, he looks good in and of himself as well. One neat thing is that he has almost no kibble or even undercarriage junk like many jet-formers. The only kibble he has is the false cockpit for robot mode that’s visible on his undercarriage, but otherwise, this is a pretty convincing plane, insofar as Transformers go.
Robot mode is similarly good looking. His face is definitely movie style in that it’s got lots of lines and panels showing. It’s kind of like RotF Optimus Prime without his mask on, although Dirge’s face reminds me of G.I. Joe’s Destro for some reason. Not much else to say really, he just looks great here, and I think that despite the overly complex face, he’d fit in well with your Classics or Universe figures.
Colors are excellent in both modes. The primary blue/green is neat, but if you’re worried about the “gold” highlights, there’s no need to fear. It actually looks pretty cool. It’s a dull; almost an orangey bronze color. I was going to paint his legs gold before I got him, but once I did get him and transformed him into robot mode, I thought the bronze worked, so I left it be.

Dirge is well articulated overall, although his cockpit arm is a tad oversize for him; so it gets in the way somewhat. Besides that though, this guy’s practically gold. His feet have got weird, angled proportions, so you don’t stand him flat footed, which can be awkward at first, but once you figure it out, it’s actually a pretty balance-ful foot design. If nothing else, you can use his jet wings to help prop him up ala a tripod, for improved posability.
Yes, he has spinning nipples as his gimmick. Aaaaanywho…
The firing missile pods are neat. Not only do they have the rounded look of the original Conehead Seekers, but you can attach ’em either to the side of his legs or have him wielding them on his arm, Old-skool Seekah Stal-ye, yo.
Transformation is a hoot. It’s sort of like Beast Wars Megatron with the upper torso being side ways in alt mode. It’s complicated without being hard, and despite seemingly requiring that you line everything up just nice, it’s actually no prob getting a seamless vehicle mode for when you transform him back.
3.1 out of 4.0
One of the better Deluxes out of the RotF line, and like Bludgeon, he integrates well with your Classics/Universe figures as well as RotF figures. Dirge does everything right, and a Ramjet repaint seems inevitable. If I didn’t already have a Classics Ramjet, I’d totally want them to repaint this mold as all 3 Coneheads.
I wouldn’t say Dirge is a mind-blowingly great must-have, but he’s a very successful toy. I’d put him somewhere in the top quarter of your overall Transformers shopping list, but for he’s near the top insofar as RotF Deluxes go. Pick him up, he’s totally worth retail or lower.
Pros: Good on all fronts, from robot to jet to transformation to articulation to play value.
Cons: Gimpy kibbly right arm, not too bad though. Kibbly in general, but not too bad either.
